With the advent of mandatory AIS came an end to the anonymity that operators had been able to use to cloak the true positions of their vessels from the eyes of the world. Although there is a lot to be said for transparency in some circumstances, commercial confidentiality does deserve respect and there may be very good reasons for wanting to keep fleet positions a secret both from the owners' and the cargo interests' points of view.
