Risky business

There is nothing like visiting an exhibition such as SMM for prompting thoughts about the future of shipping. There is an underlying current of ideas and discussions at seminars, conferences and in private that both challenge and reinforce accepted ideas of where shipping is heading. Take, for instance, the idea of using LNG as the marine fuel of choice. When the concept was first publicly mooted at SMM a few years back it was met with scepticism. Now many of the sceptics have acknowledged LNG's potential, even if they still believe that its acceptance as a mainstream fuel lies far into the future. Almost all engine-makers have dual-fuel offerings in their product range or have announced plans to produce them.
