Water treatment systems have been a hot topic in shipping for several years now, firstly because of discharge of black water, both legitimately and criminally, and illegal overside discharge of oily water from bilges and fuel treatment systems. In addition the incredibly protracted ratification - still not completed -of the 2004 Ballast Water convention has seen equipment makers standing idle and unable to recoup the development costs of systems that have been given type approval, while newcomers continue to arrive on the scene in anticipation of a soon-to-material-ise bonanza.
