US navy aids research

Us ocean science research capacity is to be strengthened in the next few years through a new generation of navy-owned vessels destined for operation by US academic institutions. Keel-laying for two 72.5m newbuilds ordered from Dakota Creek Industries took place during August at the company's Anacortes yard in the state of Washington. Designated as AGOR (auxiliary general purpose oceanographic research) Armstrong-class vessels, the new pair will displace two existing, 1969/70-built ships in the UNOLS (University-National Oceanographic Laboratory System)-ascribed academic fleet.
