After receiving Senate approval last week, coal-to-liquids (CTL) proponents are hoping a synthetic fuels provision in the fiscal year 2009 Department of Defense (DOD) authorization bill will make its way through a conference committee this week, potentially paving the way for use of CTL-derived aviation fuel by the US Air Force. The section of the bill would allow DOD to enter into up to 10-year contracts with fuel producers for the purchase of alternative and synthetic fuels, doubling the agency's existing contracting authority, according to Coal-to-Liquids Coalition (CTLC) spokesman Corey Henry.
