The charter market was unstable in August, despite the fact that reported fixtures were 15% to 20% up on July. Many prompt ships found employment, mostly short-term, but a 9% increase in the supply of newbuilds during 2001, coupled with a slowing in trade growth from an anticipated 9% to less than 4%, means that there is an imbalance between the supply of and demand for tonnage.
