Time to take stock?

Bumper years in 1998/99 and 1999/2000 saw Australian container throughput soaring, and as port corporations have been anxious to point out, long-term growth trends continue to exceed predictions made less than ten years ago. It is double-digit annual increases that have prompted expansion plans for Sydney/Port Botany and Melbourne, and to a lesser extent Brisbane. Elsewhere, in New South Wales at Port Kembla and Newcastle, in Western Australia, at James Point and Bunbury, in Queensland at Gladstone, and in the Northern Territory at Darwin, opportunities to develop, share or regain container trade have been identified and are at various stages of progression towards reality.
