Coming out of the shadows

Long considered one of the most interesting operators in the Brazilian maritime world ― and certainly one of its most high-profile characters ― Richard Klien, the vice president of ocean carrier Transroll Navegacao and a director of container terminal Santos Brasil, has spent most of the past three years living in the shadows. But now, he is hinting at a comeback. His 'retirement' from the liner business was in many ways a loss for Brazil. Klien had long been seen as a deep thinker about shipping who sometimes came up with innovative ideas, regarding cabotage trades and logistics. He also helped pioneer new transport developments in the giant South American country. As Robert Higgin, the president of CNNT (the Centro do Navegacao), which represents foreign shipowners in Brazil, said: 'Richard Klien is a very dynamic guy who works hard in a number of different areas, and in Brazilian ship-ping circles he still has a very good reputation.'
