Prices were mixed across Canada, with the exception of British Columbia. Asphalt demand increased as the paving season began to hit its stride heading into warmer months, but supply availability remained robust. Good weather prompted strong rack demand across Quebec and eastern Canada. Fresh buying halted the decline seen in Montreal rack prices that had characterized recent weeks, but the new demand did not prompt increases. An MTQ letting was bid on 12 May for asphalt grades not bid during the previous letting on 9 April. Prices rose by $30/t for premium grades PG 58-34T and PG 64-34T. The letting could be an indicator of higher prices in the next MTQ bid round on 26 May. Spring thaw regulations in Quebec are scheduled to end in three phases beginning 22 May in the province’s most southern areas and on 5 June for northern regions.
