When Maersk Line suffered a couple of serious accidents in 2012, its chief safety specialist wanted to know how Maersk's safety record stood up against others in the industry. "I was a little bit in the dark and I thought we might be able to do more for safety performance so I was looking for a benchmark and like-minded people who had the same issue I had," says Aslak Ross, Maersk head of marine standards and the carrier's designated person ashore. "I reached out to six other managers and owners and asked if they would be interested in sharing their safety data. People were very open and we shared our data in 2012 and had some dialogue discussing safety issues."
