Italian bioenergy group Aiel is lobbying the Italian government to reduce the value-added tax (VAT) increase on wood pellets in an effort to strengthen an oversupplied market. The group is to present the signatures that it has gathered against the tax increase to the government at the end of April. Some members of the government have conceded that they made a mistake, Aiel consultant Annalisa Paniz said. “But they have added that now it is too late — and you need to leave it,” she said. “This issue is not at the top of the list of the government, but we are trying to put it as one of the main issues for the Italian industry. If we are lucky we can try to change this situation not for this year, but for starting for next year.”
