When the Channel Tunnel between England and continental Europe was opened in 1994, it was heralded as a new dawn for intra-European cargo transport. Short-sea operators quivered at the rival prospect. However, like most new ideas in logistics, the illogical has since prevailed, with the underground rail freight link being nothing but a commercial disaster.
