Indian Railways, which owns the country's tracks and operates its locomotives, has increased its tariff for container shipments by between 3% and 15% from August, mainly due to higher fuel costs. Yogendra Sharma, ceo of Adani Logistics, which is one of 13 private rail licensees running intermodal services in India, told CI: 'While container rail service providers do not have a difficulty with import/ export boxes as the additional costs can be passed onto the customer, this is not possible with domestic traffic because of the competition, particularly with road transport.'
