A poor Christmas peak season and negligible recovery in volumes ahead of the Chinese New Year has prompted major consortia in the North and East Asia-Australia trade to cut capacity. The AAUS group (APL, Evergreen, Hamburg Sud, Hapag-Lloyd, Hyundai Merchant Marine) has suspended one of two loops on the route and withdrawn three ships. The standalone southern string (AAS) has been moth-balled until at least June and instead the group will operate a combined northern and southern AAUS service with 6 × 3,600TEU vessels on a 42-day rotation.
