Despite being one of the most important, influential, and innovative surgeons America has ever produced, the remarkable life journey of Dr William Stewart Halsted is known to few outside the field of surgery. Halsted's contributions to surgery include one of the first blood transfusions in the United States, one of the first gallstone operations in the United States, local (nerve block) anesthesia, modern intestinal anastomosis, inguinal hernia repair, the radical mastectomy for breast cancer, surgical gloves, the first resection of a cancer of the ampulla of Vater, thyroidectomy, a treatment for abdominal aneurysms, and the buried plate and screw technique to treat long bone fractures. Although this list is long and impressive, Dr Halsted's most important contributions to American surgery were the establishment of the first residency training system in the United States and the introduction of safe surgery.
