US box shortage hits intermodal

The ongoing shortage of sea container equipment has spread to the US domestic trades as logistics service providers (LSPs) and intermodal marketing companies (IMCs) complain of a dearth of domestic 53ft boxes. Thus far, cargo owners have been able to mitigate the impact of ocean container shortages by transloading cargo into/from larger 53ft domestic boxes. This has enabled shipping lines to return empty sea containers back to Asia to feed exporters' constrained equipment needs.
