RCL and SSL sail into the red

Intra-Asia ocean carrier specialists Bangkok-headquartered Regional Container Lines (RCL) and Jakarta-based Samudera Shipping Line (SSL) posted gloomy financial results for Q3 09. Revenues at RCL and SSL plummeted by 33.1 and 31.6 to USD 102.9 million and USD85.1 million, respectively, while both lost money at the oper- ating (earnings before interest and tax-EBIT) level (see table). Both carriers move local import/export (COC) and feeder (SOC) traffic and while SSL does not provide a detailed breakdown of its carryings, an analysis of RCL's figures suggest that it was the feeder sector most under pressure in 2009.
