Spending on companion animal medicines flat in Australia

While levels of expenditure at veterinary clinics has grown in Australia, spending on companion animal medicines has remained the same over the past three years.According to a new report carried out by Newgate Research on behalf of Animal Medicines Australia, pet owners spent Aus$1.4 billion ($0.96 billion) on healthcare products in 2019. This is the same amount as the last time pet owners were surveyed in 2016.The report said the flat pet medicines sector in Australia "has been led by a reported decline in spend by cat owners in particular, with falls also among dog and reptile owners". Many cat and dog medicines are now readily available online at decreasing prices -suggesting a drop in spend does not necessarily mean a fall in the number of medicines purchased.
