When the final C-17 Globemaster went wheels-up from Hamid Karzai International Airport the night of Aug. 30, it put an end to U.S. presence in Afghanistan, but it wasn't nearly the end of the story. In the weeks since the end of 20 years of operations, senior leaders have spoken publicly about the mistakes made in the course of the withdrawal as they tried to explain the decision-making that went into that series of events. No where was that more stark than in Sept. 17, when U.S. Central Command's boss, Marine Gen. Frank McKenzie, announced that the Aug. 29 Hellfire strike on a suspected ISIS bombmaker in Kabul erroneously targeted a civilian.
