EPA expands list of eligible fuels to meet 2014 RFS cellulosic mandate.

On July 2, the US EPA expanded the types of fuels that companies can utilize to meet the cellulosic biofuel requirement under the 2014 RFS, which calls for 17MM gal of cellulosic biofuel to be blended into the US fuel pool. New fuels that qualify as cellulosic biofuels include compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG) that is produced using biogas derived from landfills, manure digesters, and sewage treatment plants. Electricity that is generated from biogas and utilized to power electric vehicles now also qualifies as a cellulosic biofuel. Commenting on the expanded biofuels list the EPA said, "These pathways have the potential to provide notable volumes of cellulosic biofuel for use in complying with the (Renewable Fuel Standard) program, since significant volumes of advanced biofuels are already being generated for fuel made from biogas."
