The present work discusses the possibilities ofapplication of the gravitational segregation in the removal of leadand iron from liquid Cu-Fe-Pb alloys. Such alloys are obtained inflash smelting of copper concentrates as a result of slag reductionin electric furnace. Iron and lead re then, according to currenttechnology, oxidised in the converter. The partial substitution ofthe stage of oxidation in the converter by segregation shouldimprove the technology as well as reduce harmful environmentalinteractions. The examination of segregation process was basedon the analysis of phase equilibria in the systems Cu-Pb and Cu-Fe-Pb, which were evaluated for this purpose. The segregationexperiments were carried out under various conditions onsynthetic Cu-Pb and Cu-Fe-Pb alloys, as well as a Cu-Fe-Pballoy produced in the electric furnace. The distribution ofcomponents and structure of obtained ingots were studied bymeans of chemical analysis, x-ray microanalysis as well as opticaland scanning electron microscopy. In most favourable cases thesegregation degree was higher than 80% in laboratory conditions.The possible application of results in industrial conditions werealso discussed.
