US crude, product inventories post massive builds.

Combined EIA crude and product inventories increased over the week ending Jan. 6 by 17.5MM bbl to 893.7MM bbl. Crude oil stocks jumped 4.1MM bbl to 483.1MM bbl, largely rebounding from a sharp decline in the week prior, and outpacing analysts' expectations for a 1.2MM-bbl rise. The crude stockbuild was despite record-high refinery throughput, which reached 17.1MM b/d. Analysts noted that some of the crude build could be attributed to companies bringing stocks back onshore after recently putting them in floating storage due to end-year tax purposes. On the other hand, crude stocks held at the NYMEX WTI delivery point of Cushing, Oklahoma fell 579K bbl to 66.93MM bbl.
