European biodiesel margins have been under pressure in recent weeks, especially for RME (rapeseed methyl ester) due to higher vegetable oil prices—themselves supported by limited rainfall and expectations of a less than stellar harvest. A bullish futures curve for rapeseed oil had suggested that margins may remain narrow, but the futures curve for biodiesel is now reflecting the same bullishness. "Stronger feedstocks have given the edge to the bulls -stocks aren't important if you can't make any more product," said a source, referring to high stocks of both FAME 0 (fatty Acid Methyl Ester) and RME (rape methyl ester) in the ARA.
