The June issue of Shock offers a particularly interesting combination of important reports including an excellent review article, 1 clinical study, basic science reports, and commentaries. Leading off is a review of the role of protein kinase C isoforms in acute respiratory distress syndrome by Mondrinos et al. (1) from Laurie Kilpatrick's group with contributions from Cliff Deutschman. This is a very comprehensive review of an important topic from a highly expert group and should emerge as the definitive reference for the role of protein kinase C isoforms in inflammation, especially related to lung injury. In this month's clinical report, Wang et al. (2) used a bioinfor-matics approach to search for microRNA (miR) in the serum of septic patients that might serve as a biomarker for severe sepsis. They identified 41 novel miRs, the expressions of six of which were found to correlate with survival and when combined with injury scores were highly predictive of mortality (100% sensitivity and 82.6% specificity). Although this study just examined the miRs as markers, it would be interesting to analyze putative targets for these miRs to see if they might be involved in regulation of the injury response.
