US unveils updated CAFE standards to bolster vehicle fuel efficiency

On April 1,the National Highway Traffic Safer)'Administration(NHTSA)announced that it will boost corporate average fuel economy(CAFE)standards by 8% for both the 2024 and 2025 model years and 10% in 2026 as part of the Biden administration's pledge to lower GHG emissions from the transport sector.That was a slightly bigger-increase than the proposal outlined in Aug.The NHTSA rules are about the same as rules previously announced by the EPA last Dec.for a fleetwide real-world average of about 40 mpg in 2026,compared with 32 mpg under the Trump administration,which rolled back CAFE standards to require only 1.5% annual increases in efficiency through 2026,much less than the 5.0% annual increases required by the Obama administration.The EPA said that its rules will result in 3.IB mt of avoided CO2 emissions through 2050.Major automakers on March 30 backed the EPA's revisions over challenges brought by some states and some ethanol groups.
