US: MIT develops cheaper and safer lithium battery for hybrids

RESEARCHERS at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have developed a new lithium battery as a cheaper alternative to the batteries currently used in hybrid electric cars. Current lithium batteries do not offer the rapid charging capability or safety level required for use in cars. Hybrid cars today use nickel metal hydride batteries that power an electric motor and can recharge quickly while the car is decelerating or standing still. The MIT lithium battery contains manganese and nickel. Gerbrand Ceder, MIT professor of materials science and engineering and project leader, explained in a paper to be published in Science that, "lithium nickel manganese oxide could revolutionise the hybrid car industry."
