China's coal output rises after NDRC urges miners to ramp up

China's National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) has urged coal miners to raise their operating rates and increase supply amid a power shortage in the country and high prices for natural gas in other parts of the world. Since September, 153 coal mines have been allowed to increase their production by a total of 220 million tonnes per year following stringent safety checks, the NDRC said on Monday October 18. This is expected to increase coal output in the fourth quarter by more than 50 million tonnes, it said.
