Salinger Challenges Unauthorized Sequel To His Novel, The Catcher in the Rye

Renowned American author J.D, Salinger on June 1 filed a complaint in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York against a pseudonymous author, his publisher, and distributor, seeking to enjoin their distribution of a book titled 60 Years Later: Coming Through the Rye (Salinger v. Doe, S.D.N.Y., No. 08 Civ. 5095, complaint filed 6/1/09). Salinger alleged that the book is an unauthorized sequel to his classic novel, The Catcher in the Rye, that it infringes his copyright on the book's main character, Holden Caulfield, and that it is an infringing derivative work.
