Buccleuch Estates has been fined £140,000 after a worker was killed during tree felling in Bogrie Wood near Drumlanrig Castle in Dumfries. The incident occurred in January 2011. Ross Findlay, who had worked for the estate for 33 years after leaving school, was acting as a signalman for two colleagues, one of whom was cutting the trees with a chainsaw while the other was pulling the trees into the crop with a tractor winch. The system required Mr Findlay to be standing at least two tree lengths away from the tree that was being felled and in a position where he could see his colleagues and where they in turn could see him.
