A Crown Court judge has rejected an appeal against an immediate custodial sentence imposed in a magistrates' court on a self-employed painter and oddjobber who carried out unlicensed work with asbestos. The painter, Brian Roberts, was imprisoned for 26 weeks on 12 June (HSB 441 p.4) but appealed against his sentence. On 24 July at Caernarfon Crown Court, Recorder RR Rees dismissed his appeal. Roberts' unlicensed and negligent removal of asbestos insulating board (AIB) exposed himself and three other workers, as well as their families, to the risk of inhaling asbestos fibres.
