HIGHER metal prices and strong demand for aluminium in the aerospace and commercial transportation markets enhanced Alcoa's full year 2006 earnings by nearly 82%. For the financial year 2006, net income rose to US$2.25bn (or US$2.57 a share) and revenue increased by 19% to US$30.4bn. Income from continuing operations before special items totalled US$2.5bn. According to Alain Belda, chairman and chief executive officer of Alcoa, the company successfully mitigated costs, brought in new products and innovation to the market, expanded its global footprint and grew its customer base. He added that the company will generate more cash this year to finance its capital investment programmes. In the fourth quarter, revenues increased 20% to US$7.84bn, up from US$6.54bn a year earlier. Net income surged 60.27% to US$359m (US$0.41 per share).
