The journey toward community practitioners being able to prescribe from the Nurse Preservers' Formulary (NPF)1 began with a suggestion in the Cumberlege Report.2 The gauntlet was taken up by the Crown Report,3 which recommended that patient care should be enhanced by widening prescribing rights to include nurses with a community specialist practice qualification (CSPQ). Legislation was put in place in 1992 to enable this.A community practitioner nurse prescriber (CPNP) is a registered nurse or midwife who has undertaken a course of study with an accredited educational institute, and who has passed the assessment enabling them to obtain the VI00 NMC recordable qualification. As such, they are qualified to prescribe within their field of competence from the NPF.
