THE RECENT REPORT FROM THE JOINT committee on human rights The UK's compliance with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (Joint Committee on Human Rights, 2015) sounds as though it should be a dull read, but it is surprisingly interesting. The committee examined the effects of the coalition government's legislation on various issues and concluded that children's rights are not taken into account sufficiently across the government, but seem to be limited to certain departments such as education. There are concerns that tax and benefit changes have affected poorer children disproportionately and other issues such as austerity, child migrants, legal aid and treatment of children in the criminal justice system are causing concern.
