Lukoil drills first Uzbek well

Lukoil Overseas, the international arm of Russia's Lukoil, has started drilling the first exploration well at the West Aral structure in the Usturt region of Uzbekistan, the company said January 22. Lukoil already has conducted a 2-D seismic study on more than 3,000 km of the structure. Lukoil is developing the Aral project within a consortium that includes Uzbekistan's Uzbekneftegaz, Malaysia's Petronas, China's CNPC and South Korea's KNOC, under a production sharing agreement signed in August 2006. Each of the companies owns a 20% stake.
