Indian farmers gain from internet access

EChoupal, a programme of ITC Ltd., one of the largest corporations in India, has set up a network of internet kiosks to help farmers gain access to market information. This initiative has been recognised by a 100,000 dollar award - the Development Gateway Award 2005. Through its network of internet kiosks, eChoupal has enabled millions of farmers to access up-to-date data about the weather, input costs, market prices and technical information, all in the local language. Recently, eChoupal added health services to its network of internet kiosks and announced the launch of a new educational services pilot. "By delivering essential healthcare and educational information, we can extend the benefits of eChoupal more deeply into the fabric of communities across India," said Mr.Y C Deveshwar, ITC chairman. "And by recognising programmes like ours, the Development Gateway Foundation is spurring on the use of information technologies in communities worldwide, to build grassroots capacities and enhance the quality of life."
