The springtime of urban forestry in britain-developments between the 1st and 3rd conferences, 1988-1993, part II

The 1st Conference in 1988 had not only encouraged a number of national initiatives, it also prompted the development of several city-wide urban forestry projects. The impact of the Forest of London, the work of Northern Planners, the Hyndburn project and the continuing efforts in the Black Country, had all drawn attention to the potential to develop projects embracing entire urban areas. These pioneering initiatives had highlighted the need to develop a strategic approach to urban forestry and formulate a strategy or management plan that embraced the whole urban forest. Most had also emphasised the importance of partnerships of relevant organisations working together in the same area. There was clearly a desire on the part of many of the delegates at the 1st Conference to put these principles into practice through practical projects in their own districts (DAVIES, interview, 1995). The period between the 1st and 3rd Conferences saw the development of a several major city-wide projects that achieved national publicity or significance.
