The shipping industry encountered a new level of complexity in January 2015, with the entry into force of regulation making use of fuel with sulphur content of 0.1% or less within ECAs compulsory. The composition of conventional high BN lubricants - used in conjunction with low sulphur fuel -that mainly use calcium carbonate basic detergents means that when there is little sulphuric acid to neutralise, buildup of CaC03 deposits can occur, causing oil film breakdown and rapid engine wear. In addition, potential clogging of other newly developed components, such as selective catalytic reduction systems (SCRs), can occur.
