Fundoscopy is an invaluable tool that allows non-invasive evaluation of the retinal vasculature. Abnormal vascular findings may uncover significant systemic atherosclerotic risk factors. The presence of retinal emboli may be a harbinger of a serious cerebrovascular or coronary vascular event.1 Described here is a detection of retinal emboli that resulted in a hemi-retinal arterial occlusion. The occlusion of the retinal artery was the sentinel event that uncovered important underlying vascular risk factors.
