Deformities in fish: Issues solutions for hatcheries

In the first of a series, veteran marine species hatchery manager Gidon Minkoff discusses the issue of deformities in hatchery-reared fish and possible remedies to minimize the problem. Since the early '90s we have been witnessing a substantial increase in the quantity and diversity of fish produced in hatcheries. In the Mediterranean, as the bream and bass technology undergoes significant developments, single hatcheries have advanced from producing a few million fish per year in the '90s, to tens ofmillions and in some cases a 100 million fish per year. We are also witnessing a diversification into cold water species with the emergence of new hatcheries for producing cod, sablefish and halibut. However, regardless of the fish species being produced, or the quantity being produced, there has always been a high incidence of deformed fish produced in the process.
