Experiments performed at the SINTEF/NTNU SeaLab in Norway show cod larvae achieve better growth in recirculated culture water than in flow-through systems during the. first weeks of first feeding. The growth rate offish larvae during the first month post-hatch is an important quality indicator that is also connected to their performance during the later production stages. Popular opinion in Norway has been that the availability of clean seawater eliminates the need for advanced water treatment in marine fish hatcheries. In flow-through systems waste products from the fish are diluted, and dispersed: "the solution to pollution is dilution." Flow-through systems are relatively easy to operate, but limit the possibility for controlling water quality compared to recirculation systems.
