New sturgeon plant nears completion in Moldova

Within the next few months, the final stages of development of a large interlocking complex for breeding and raising several species of sturgeon will be completed by Aquatir Limited of Moldova with the assistance of the Danish water-recirculation company, Billund Aquaculture. According to Billund's Managing Director, Bjarne Hald Olsen, who has been overseeing the development of the multi-faceted complex, the final two buildings will be pre-wintering and overwintering units. The rest of the operationincludes a hatchery, a fingerling unit, two growout buildings, three other units for large sturgeon, a spawning facility and two processing plants for caviar and for sturgeon meat. In all, said Olsen, the area under cover is about 30,000 square metres.The hatchery was one of the first units installed. It includes incubation and hatching facilities as well as a nursery for holding juvenile fish.
