European researchers team up to fight Flavobacteria

Flavobacteria are found in both freshwater and saltwater and cause significant problems for the aquaculture industry worldwide. It is one of the most costly infective agents effecting rainbow trout in freshwater and can also cause disease in brackishwater. This group of bacteria causes ulcers, high mortality rates and has a strong ability to spread. In salmon, it also causes wounds and fin rot and is frequendy associated with sepsis and increased mortality in hatcheries. A European-based collaborative project, Control of Flavobacteriaceae Infections in European fishfarms, aims to provide the aquaculture industry with tools to better control and combat the infections that the bacteria cause. The partners in the project come from France, Finland, Denmark, Switzerland, Italy and Norway. The aim is to determine how many different varieties of bacteria exist and discover the characteristics of the different types.
