Wreckfish culture a challenge for Spanish researchers

Rapid growth and good market prices make wreckfish (Polyprion amerkanus) an attractive option for commercial aquaculture in Spain. So researchers at the Instituto Espanol de Oceanografia (IEO or Spanish Oceanographic Institute) and the Galego Aquaculture Development Institute are studying the species. While progress has been made, studies into reproduction and closing the lifecycle have encountered difficulties.Personnel at the two institutes say that artificial fertilization experiments with wreckfish have had "limited success" owing to the poor quality of the eggs obtained. In addition, the fish have a long juvenile growth phase which needs to be overcome, says the report from Dr Jose Peleteiro of the IEO's centre in Vigo and DJL Rodriguez of the Instituto Galego in Ilia de Arousa.
