China Achieves Quantum Key Distribution By Satellite

Chinese scientists have taken a large step toward a theoretically secure communication technology, demonstrating quantum key distribution (QKD) between ground stations via a satellite. The ground stations were 1,120 km (700 mi.) apart, the researchers wrote in a paper published in the science journal Nature on June 15. QKD had previously been demonstrated in laboratories at up to 404 km and about 100 km outside of laboratories, they said.
