Greater expectations of comfort, autonomous driving and CO_2 reduction are leading to a growing demand for electrical power in the vehicle while at the same time increasing the range of systems. Here, supercapacitors offer major advantages - both as individual cells in the case of low-voltage batteries and as modules for batteries in 12-V, 24-V and 48-V vehicle-control systems. As According to Eberspaecher, these systems usually do not compete with conventional lead or lithiumion batteries, and instead represent supplementary solutions for specific ?applications. The latest market research indicates that a majority of all new vehicles sold will feature a partially electric or all-electric powertrain by the end of the current decade. Given that many of these vehicles will need to be charged via an external source of power, the availability of fast DC charging infrastructures will be indispensable. Otherwise, the use of BEVs will remain limited to shorter distances. Infineon describes how SiC and Si-based power electronics, optimally ?configured topologies combined with corresponding microcontrollers, and sophisticated authentication and security solutions will facilitate the widespread introduction ?of DC charging infrastructures for future requirements. In the interview, Sebastian Pohlmann, Vice President of Inno vation at Skeleton Technologies, discusses the potential ?of battery and fuel-cell systems that are supplemented by supercapacitors. Pohlmann concludes that superca pacitors can increase the efficiency of both energy-storage types.
