Smartphone-based Driver Safety Data Complements OEMs' Connected-car Data

We recently checked in with the folks at Cambridge Mobile Telematics (CMT) to see what we could learn about the role data analytics and smartphones are playing in the delivery of safety features to drivers. Founded in 2010, CMT has grown to become the world’s largest mobile telematics company, with a valuation north of one billion US dollars and 224 employees. The company is based in Cambridge, Massachusetts (USA). In 2012, it deployed its first usage-based insurance (UBI) application on smartphones, and today the company serves 65 insurance partners in the USA, Europe, Japan and elsewhere. 60 % of the world’s UBI application downloads employ their technology. Over the years CMT has collected hundreds of billions of miles worth of data from smartphones. Its software engineers, data scientists and actuaries have developed software that uses that smartphone data and other sources to assess risk based on actual driver behavior. The telematics-based offering employs high l y predictive factors like speeding, hard braking and phone distraction (both tapping and phone motion) to draw an unbiased and accurate picture of crash risk for underwriting and rating. Drivers are able to see how their driving impacts risk and ultimately what they pay for insurance.
