Soft- and Hardware for High-Definition Automotive Lighting Systems

The High-definition (HD) light module h-Digi from Marelli Automotive Lighting already offered projecting of animated light distributions with 1.3 million pixels when it was launched in small series in 2018. The know-how in the field of HD lighting systems resulted in further developments of the h-Digi for series vehicles in the premium segments in the following years and found expression in series developments of new E/E architectures, electronic lighting control devices and software. The first HD headlight control units and the integrated video software core were developed. These developments make it possible to create special end customer features based on high-definition lighting technologies. Digital lighting technologies are thus a key element for improving the quality of existing vehicle lighting systems as well as for introducing completely new features.In order to achieve a high market penetration, a wide range of functions must be offered based on customer use cases, FIGURE 1. For this purpose, vehicle lighting is divided into the following categories: main light, signal light, driver assistance (ADAS) and convenience features. In their basic realization, main light features consist of low beam and high beam, FIGURE 2. They ensure maximum road illumination while improving safety and comfort.for the vehicle passengers. High-definition lighting massively improves the customer experience with a new quality of Adaptive Driving Beam (ADB), which includes nearly permanent high beam that is glarefree for upcoming car drivers. Latest functio nalities encompass avoidance of glare for further traffic.participants such cyclists or pedestrians. Driving experience is significantly im p r oved by avoidance of glare for the driver for example by road signs. Furthermore, this provides the prerequisite for significantly better visibility even in adverse conditions such as bad weather (rain, fog, etc.).
