A curious case of beta-blockers in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Contrary to the traditional dogma that the use of (3-blockers is dangerous in patients with COPD, there is emerging evidence that treatment with (3-blockers, particularly those that are cardioselective, is safe3 and well tolerated4 and can produce good clinical outcomes in patients with COPD,S similar to what has been observed in patients without COPD.1 In this issue of the Archives, Rutten et al6 used a rich data source from 35 collaborating general practitioner offices in the Netherlands to provide further assurances that treatment with P-blockers, even noncardioselective ones, is indeed safe and effective in patients with COPD.
