UN Extends, Reduces DRC Peacekeeping Mission

The United Nations (UN) Security Council has extended the current mandate of the UN peacekeeping force, MONUC, in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) by one month, until June 30, after which it will become a stabilization mission. The new United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission (MONUSCO) is authorized to stay in the DRC until June 30,2011. The resolution also authorizes the withdrawal of up to 2,000 UN military personnel by the end of June from areas where security has improved enough to allow their removal.
