This study demonstrates a method wherein a fluorescent molecular probe (6-carboxy fluorescein) is used for in-situ, real-time monitoring of the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that are responsible for chemical degradation of the PEM (polymer electrolyte membrane) during fuel cell operation. An example of the method’s utility for assessing mitigation of PEM degradation was successfully shown by incorporating free radical scavengers (FRS), CeO2 nanoparticles, into the PEM. This paper discusses the requirements for the use of a molecular probe for in-situ monitoring of ROS and the probe’s compatibility with components found in the fuel cell.
